Sometimes you want to encourage someone and the words do not come easily. You care about the person and you see they are trying. Yet you are not sure how to lift them up without sounding forced or awkward.
That feeling is common. Many people experience it.
There is a pattern many of us fall into. I sometimes think of it as the empty cup feeling. You want to give encouragement yet you feel tired or unsure what to say. When that happens it helps to pause and check in with yourself first 🤍.
starting with yourself
You cannot pour from an empty cup. When you take care of yourself you are better able to encourage someone else.
Self care is not selfish. Reading for ten minutes, taking a brief walk, or making a nourishing meal can help you return to yourself so you can show up with patience and kindness 🌿.
Once you are in that place encouragement often begins with something simple.
noticing what is already there
Noticing.
If you like someone outfit tell them. If a coworker just completed a weeks long project send a message congratulating them. If a friend is fully present in a conversation applaud them for it.
These small acknowledgments can change how someone sees themselves.
Many people believe encouragement should wait for the big milestones. Yet the small wins matter most. The everyday effort that no one else sees. When someone hears that their effort is noticed motivation begins to grow.
listening as encouragement
Encouragement also grows through listening.
Turn toward the person speaking. Make eye contact 👀. Nod your head so they know you are present. Ask questions that help them reflect on what they are experiencing.
Listen without judgment and allow them to come to their own conclusions.
Often people do not need solutions. They need space. They need to feel heard.
speaking appreciation out loud
Another gentle way to encourage someone is through gratitude.
You might say you are grateful for the way they make you laugh 😊. You might thank them for their leadership that keeps a team moving forward. You might tell a sibling you are inspired by how they make time for their hobbies.
When you speak these things out loud it helps the other person see the good that is already inside them.
encouragement through action
Encouragement can also move through simple acts of kindness.
Share what you have. Pass along books or clothing you no longer need. Leave flowers on someone doorstep 🌸. Bake something and bring it to a neighbor. Pay for the car behind you in a drive thru. Let someone cut in line when they seem rushed.
These small gestures remind people that they are not alone.
using words when they come
Words can help as well.
Send a random text of encouragement. Write a thank you note and include a piece of candy 🍬. Leave a positive note on a coworker computer screen. Write a letter to a teacher or mentor who made a difference in your life.
Sometimes encouragement means helping in practical ways.
Make a meal for a family with a newborn. Cut grass for an elderly neighbor. Take the trash cans off the curb. Hold the door open. Offer your seat on the bus 🚌. Smile at the cashier.
what makes encouragement feel real
These actions may seem small while you are doing them yet they often stay with people longer than you expect.
True encouragement is honest and authentic. It grows from real appreciation rather than flattery. When your words come from sincerity people feel it.
Over time encouragement can become a habit.
You begin to notice goodness everywhere. The effort people make. The way they keep showing up even when life feels difficult. The courage it takes to keep going.
When you notice something good say something.
the ripple it creates
Encouragement rarely feels dramatic in the moment yet it still makes a difference. A kind word or a small act of care can change someone day in ways you may never see.
There is something else worth remembering.
When you encourage someone else you also shape the kind of community you live in. A place where people feel supported and seen 🤝.
Small encouragement given again and again slowly builds that kind of world.
- one kind word 💬
- one small act 🤍
